DIET
The majority of Hedgehog owners and breeders consider the basic diet for the APH, to be good quality dry cat food, you are looking for a food which is high in protien common brands in use are Whiskas, Go Cat, Iams (only offer meat based products i.e Chicken, Beef, Lamb.)(Do not offer any fish based kibble). The advantage of using the dry kibble this allows the hog to exercise its teeth (as opposed to wet cat food) and thus preventing dental problems.
In addition to the basic diet of kibble it is also advisable to offer a variation of other foods. These included the following:
Cottage Cheese, Boiled or Scrammbled Eggs, Cooked Chicken, Mince, Lamb, Canned/Packet cat food (again no fish based products). Fruit and Vegetables can also be offered such as Apple, Tomato, Broccoli ect. Although you may find you hog will show little interest in these foods you can over come this with a little trickery. Mix with wet cat food or with the cooked meats shown above and you can try to ensure your hog is consuming a healthy and varied diet. As a treat a little honey will be welcomed and will help to tempt your hog into trying other foods as with the wet cat food.
As the African Pygmy Hedgehog is primarily an insectivor they will enjoy Live foods such as Mealworm, Crickets these are readily available at most pet shop/reptile dealers. However it is important that this type of food is only given as a treat as it is high in fats. (If the thought of feeding live insects is a little off putting these are also available in dried form) feed as above.
To encourage foraging I place dried mealworms, Peanuts, Sunflower seeds around the cages late in the evening so they can actively root around there cages to provide stimulation and prevent boredom.
You must always ensure fresh water is available to your Hog at all times.
